Step 1: Prepare Your Ground & Seeds
First, select a sunny spot with well-draining soil. I always start by picking my best seeds—look for plump, unblemished ones. Prepare the soil by weeding and lightly turning the top layer.Step 2: My Signature Seeding Style
My method ensures optimal space for growth and airflow, which helps prevent mildew!Create Rows: Use a hoe or trowel to mark out straight rows, ensuring they are 45 cm apart. This wider spacing is key for easy access and plant health.
Make the Holes: Along each row, use your finger or a dibber to create shallow holes. The spacing between seeds should be 3cm to 4cm. Always check your specific pea variety's packet for any unique depth or spacing recommendations and adjust accordingly.
Planting: Drop 2-3 seeds into each hole and gently cover them with soil. Lightly firm the soil over the seeds.
Step 3: Immediate Care (Post-Sowing)
Watering: Water the newly sown area gently but thoroughly. The goal is to keep the soil consistently moist (but not soggy) for germination.Step 4: Before Germination
Before Germination (Approx. 7-14 Days): Keep the soil evenly moist. Protect the area from pests (like birds or mice) that might dig up your seeds using netting or a simple barrier.Step 5: After Germination
Once seedlings emerge, reduce watering. Peas need support! Install a trellis, stakes, or netting now so the young plants can start climbing early.Step 6: Fertilizing
Peas are legumes, meaning they fix nitrogen, so they rarely need nitrogen fertilizer. A little phosphorus or potassium boost when the first flowers appear can help with pod production.Harvesting: Begin harvesting when the pods are plump and bright green. Picking regularly encourages the plant to produce more!
